BEFORE AFTER
Well folks, we had another first for Tiger Haven and the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) -- a lion with a HUGE hair ball. Actually, it has turned out to be FOUR large hair balls!
Leonardo had not been himself for several weeks. We spoke with our vets, they came to Tiger Haven and did some bloodwork to check for an infection or possible kidney issues. We continued monitoring his condition and treating him here at the facility without success. All tests came back normal but Leonardo still didn't want to eat and seemed to gag a lot.
So, last week we took him to UTCVM (University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine) for a x-ray and scope, but nothing was found. The only other step was to do exploratory surgery, which we did. Poor Leonardo had a big hair ball, (mane-ball actually), in his stomach and intestine which had not been visible on any of the scopes or x-rays. The vets removed the hair and checked the rest of the intestine where they found some additional blockages. Leonardo did well for being under anesthesia for a bit over 7 hours. He will be on a ground food diet for the next few weeks while the incision heals (both inside and out).
If you would like to help us with Leonardo's medical bills, please consider adopting him. Just click on his picture to help Leonardo. Tiger Haven has a long history of providing medical care for all of our cats in order to make their lives happy and healthy.

Tiger Haven is now home to 271 Great Cats. We receive NO funding from the State or Government. Our only source of funding is from you, the public. We feed over 2000 pound of meat and chicken to the cats each day, none of which is donated. It takes a lot of hard work and money to take care of this many cats, but if they had not been taken by Tiger Haven, most all of them would have been “put down”. We are the last chance for these cats. Believe me, if there was anywhere for the Great Cats to live out their lives safe and comfortably, I would not have 271 of them to feed and take care of. Even though we love each one of them, it is extremely hard to feed, water, clean and take care of the medical needs of this many cats.
